About the Artists…

The Morris Knolls High School Choral Program, from Rockaway, New Jersey, has over 250 members in six choirs.  The Concert Choir and Treble Choir are the curricular choirs that meet during the school day.  The Treble Choir consists of all freshmen women, while all other students are in the Concert Choir.  The Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, Chorale and Madrigal Singers are after school, auditioned groups that meet once a week.  All choirs have travelled to Orlando, Williamsburg and Boston in the past four years earning superior ratings at every festival.  The choirs perform regularly in the community for local events and area festivals.

Michael Semancik is the Director of Choral Activities at Morris Knolls High School He earned a B.S. in music education from Slippery Rock University and an M.M. in choral conducting studying with Dr. Paul D. Head at the University of Delaware. The Morris Knolls Chorale, one of six choirs featuring over 250 choral students, has received extensive awards over the past few years under Mr. Semancik.  The choir has recently performed at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York City. In addition, they have performed overseas during Palm Sunday mass at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria and at the Czech Museum of Music in Prague, Czech Republic.  The Chorale has been selected to sing at the 2013 National Association of Music Education’s Eastern Division Convention in Hartford, Connecticut.  Michael has been the guest conductor of the Sussex County Honors Choir and has been an adjudicator in New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

About the artists…

Lakeville North High School Chorale

The Lakeville North High School Chorale is one of five curricular choral ensembles
in the Lakeville North High School vocal music program. It consists of auditioned juniors and seniors, who also are required to take private lessons as part of the Chorale class.

The Chorale is known for its tradition of performing high quality choral music with skill and musicality. Performances include a wide variety of repertoire; from light pops to the great masterworks to the vast array of multicultural choral works. These singers perform a Fall concert, Winter concert, Talent show, Masterworks concert, Cabaret concert, and Pops concert during the school year. They participate in festivals and contests around the state of Minnesota, and have received consistently high marks from clinicians and adjudicators. The LNHS Chorale recently commissioned the Benedictus, from “Celtic Mass,” by the American composer Ben Allaway.

Singers from the Chorale have received many individual honors including All-State Chorus, Best of Site awards at regional solo and ensemble contests, and selection to Minnesota ACDA Honor Choirs.

The Chorale has performed in Washington, DC, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, France, and for many honor choir festivals in the Midwest. They are looking forward to enjoying the rich cultural heritage of Italy.

Paul Wigley, director

Paul Wigley graduated from the University of Minnesota in Music Education and received his Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1997. Paul currently teaches choral music, advanced placement music theory, and class guitar at Lakeville (MN) North High School. His Lakeville HS vocal jazz ensemble has received numerous regional honors. Under the direction of Mr. Wigley, the Lakeville North High School Chorale has toured extensively in Europe, with tours including Great Britain, Italy, Austria, Spain and France. He previously taught for the Algona (IA) Community School District, which was the recipient of the Iowa Exemplary Music Program Award in November of 1998. He has delivered lectures on vocal jazz and barbershop harmony to many colleges and choral directors’ associations throughout the Midwest.

Paul judged the International Barbershop Harmony Society quartet and chorus contests in 1991, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2002, and 2008. He has also taught Barbershop Harmony Society Directors Colleges in New York, Maryland, Wisconsin, Missouri, Washington and California, and served on the National Youth Outreach Committee.

In September, 1998, he judged the European Open Choral championships in Stockholm, Sweden. He currently directs the Minneapolis Commodores, who rank in the top 25 of all barbershop choruses internationally. Other awards include Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers; Mr. Music Award, which is given once a year from the 5-state area of the Barbershop Harmony Society, 1990; and Outstanding Young Men of America. He has been a guest lecturer in vocal jazz at the University of Minnesota, Augsberg College, Iowa Choral Directors’ symposium, and Wisconsin Choral Directors’ Singspiel.

His family includes his wife, Becky, who is a substitute teacher in the Lakeville School District, and daughter Sarah, who is currently a professor of musical theatre at the University of Northern Colorado and a professional actress in the Denver area.
