Shawnee Mission North High School is located in the metropolitan area of Kansas City, in Overland Park, Kan. With 1,200 students in grades 9-12, the school boasts a long tradition of excellence in many areas, but fine arts are North’s flagship. Students participate in band, orchestra, choir, repertory theatre, musical theatre, drama and musical theatre. The choral music department consists of five choirs, ranging from non-auditioned groups, to the very select Chamber Singers. North choir students are consistently chosen for regional and State Honor Choirs, and choral groups receive superior festival ratings. Today’s performance will feature a choir of students from all choirs as well as the Chamber Singers. While the Shawnee Mission North Choirs are in high demand and perform frequently in their local area, this is the organization’s first tour in several years. The students have been preparing many months for their experiences in Chicago. The North Choir’s motto is, “It’s all about music”. We are honored to share our music with you today and hope you enjoy our performance!
Juli O’Mealey is in her first year as choral director at Shawnee Mission North High School. A National Board Certified teacher, she has been a music educator for 20 years, teaching choral music in Kansas and Oklahoma public schools. A native of Oklahoma, she holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and music education from the University of Oklahoma. Juli sang professionally with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale in Santa Fe, N.M., for five seasons, and currently holds a position as pianist and hand bell choir director at Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village, Kan. Juli enjoys working with musical productions at school, reading, needlepoint, and painting. She currently sings with the Kansas City Symphony Chorus.
