The Brown University Orchestra

THE BROWN UNIVERSITY ORCHESTRA is internationally recognized as one of America’s finest collegiate orchestras, performing a full range of repertoire from Bach to Beethoven, Mahler, Stravinsky, and music of the 21st century. Under the direction of music director Paul Phillips, who recently conducted the RTE National Symphony in Music for Great Films of the Silent Era for Naxos, the Brown Orchestra has toured China, performed at Carnegie Hall with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall with Itzhak Perlman, and won seven ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming.

Daniel Barenboim, Mstislav Rostropovich, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, Eugenia Zukerman, Christopher O’Riley, Carol Wincenc are among the many renowned musicians who have conducted or appeared as soloists with the orchestra. Well known for their commitment to new music, Phillips and the Brown Orchestra have given notable performances of contemporary works by John Adams, William Bolcom, and William Kraft, among others, and hosted numerous composers in residence, including Steve Reich, Steven Stucky, Joseph Schwantner, Michael Torke, Nico Muhly, David Amram, William Perry, Peter Boyer, Samuel Adler, and Lukas Foss. The membership of the Brown Orchestra, which was founded in 1918, consists of approximately one hundred students from Brown University, one of the eight American Ivy League universities. Paul Phillips, music director and conductor

PAUL PHILLIPS, Music Director and Conductor of the Pioneer Valley Symphony and Chorus and Director of Orchestras and Chamber Music at Brown University, is an award-winning conductor, composer, and author. Acclaimed as a conductor “who was born to stand on a podium,” his honors include 1st Prize in the NOS International Conductors Course in Holland, 1st Prize in the Wiener Meisterkurse Conductors Course in Vienna, and ten ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music.

Phillips has led the Brown University Orchestra as Music Director since 1989, developing this ensemble into one of the nation’s finest collegiate orchestras. Under his direction, the BUO has won seven ASCAP Awards; given concerts in New York at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall as well as in Boston, Cambridge, Montreal, Shanghai, and Beijing; performed with Itzhak Perlman, Joseph Kalichstein, Christopher O’Riley, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and other illustrious soloists; and collaborated with Steve Reich, Steven Stucky, and many other prominent guest composers. This season Phillips will lead the Brown University Orchestra and Chorus, joined by the Providence College Choir, in a gala performance of Beethoven’s Ninth at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence.

As Music Director of the Pioneer Valley Symphony and Chorus since 1994, Phillips has led that organization to new artistic heights, securing its position as one of the preeminent musical organizations in western Massachusetts. He has spearheaded collaborations with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, Hampshire Choral Society, Greenfield High School Chorus, Old Deerfield Productions, Amherst Ballet, glass artist Josh Simpson, and other artists and arts organizations throughout the region, and led the PVS in memorable performances of Beethoven’s Ninth, Mahler’s Second and Fifth Symphonies, Brahms Requiem, Verdi Requiem, La Traviata, The Rite of Spring, The Planets, Carmina Burana, and Ellis Island: The Dream of America.

Under his leadership, the PVS has performed dozens of premieres, won ASCAP Awards in 1997 and 2011, been profiled three times in Symphony Magazine, released the CD box set Living with the Classics for Arizona University Recordings, participated in the Earshot Project of readings of new orchestral works in cooperation with the American Composers Orchestra, and represented Massachusetts in the national Ford Made in America Project. Phillips has conducted over sixty orchestras, opera and ballet companies, and choirs worldwide, including the San Francisco Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Boston Academy of Music, Festival Ballet Providence, Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra and Choir, Hampshire Choral Society, Providence Singers, and Masterworks Chorale. His recordings include two CDs with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, a CD of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony with the Brown University Orchestra, and Music for Great Films of the Silent Era, a Naxos CD released in 2011 in which he conducts the RTE National Symphony of Ireland in music by the American composer William Perry.

With a conducting repertoire of about 1000 works, Phillips has conducted much of the standard repertoire, including opera and musical theatre ranging from Don Giovanni to Sweeney Todd. He enjoys jazz and has led concerts featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, and other popular artists. A strong believer in the importance of music in the lives of young people, he has worked extensively with student musicians and audiences as Youth Concert Conductor of the Maryland Symphony for fourteen years and as conductor of numerous youth and All-State orchestras. Together with singer-songwriter Bill Harley, who has won two Grammy Awards, Phillips has composed and arranged pieces for youth concerts that are performed by orchestras throughout the country; Jack and the Beanstalk, their most recent collaboration, was premiered by Bill Harley with the Allentown Symphony in April 2012.

The past few years have been especially productive ones for Phillips. His song cycle Battle-Pieces, settings for baritone and orchestra of six Civil War poems by Herman Melville, was premiered in October 2011, sung by Andrew Garland with the Pioneer Valley Symphony and Rene de la Garza with the Brown University Orchestra. His book A Clockwork Counterpoint: The Music and Literature of Anthony Burgess was published in 2010, as was his essay “Burgess and Music” in the new Norton Critical Edition of A Clockwork Orange and an article on Burgess was published in The Journal of Music. That year he also guest conducted at the Manhattan School of Music, led Commonwealth Opera’s annual Messiah Sing, and conducted the first staged production of Burgess’s Shakespeare ballet Mr W.S., which took place in France with the Angers Conservatory Orchestra and the dance company Marie-Laure Agrapart et Cie. In 2011, he conducted Cosi fan tutte with Opera Providence using his own revised English version of the libretto, and, as pianist, accompanied concerts for Opera Providence throughout the year. In 2010, Boosey and Hawkes published his reduced orchestration of Stravinsky’s opera Mavra; this version was performed that summer in England at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Apart from conducting, Phillips is an accomplished composer, pianist, and author. His music has been performed internationally and received many prizes, including awards from the New England String Ensemble, American Music Center, and ASCAP. As a pianist, he has performed at the Mohawk Trail Concerts, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Carnegie Recital Hall, and Lincoln Center, and recorded for film and television. His book A Clockwork Counterpoint: The Music and Literature of Anthony Burgess, published in 2010 by Manchester University Press, has enjoyed critical acclaim. According to one reviewer, Phillips is “the world’s most energetic and influential champion of Burgess’s music”, whose “knowledge of Burgess’s writings rivals his technical knowledge of music, so that he is better qualified than any previous writer on Burgess to take the full measure of the man’s accomplishments.” Another described the book as “sumptuous, prodigiously researched, elegantly written”, “necessary and splendid”, and “seamlessly fascinating”, concluding that Phillips “has conjured up a ‘new’ Burgess that will forever alter his reputation.” Earlier publications include “The Enigma of Variations: A Study of Stravinsky’s Final Work for Orchestra”, an article called “the best exposition in print of Stravinsky’s serial methods” by the eminent musicologist Richard Taruskin in his book Stravinsky and the Russian Traditions.

After attending the Eastman School of Music as a composition-piano major, Phillips graduated cum laude in music from Columbia University, later earning graduate degrees in composition and conducting from Columbia and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, respectively. He pursued additional studies at the Salzburg “Mozarteum”, Académie internationale d’été in Nice, Eastman, Music Academy of the West, Aspen, and Tanglewood. His conducting teachers include Kurt Masur, Gunther Schuller, and Leonard Bernstein. After beginning his career at the Frankfurt Opera and Stadttheater Lüneburg in Germany, he was selected for the Exxon/Arts Endowment Conductors Program and subsequently returned to the US, assuming conducting posts in Greensboro and Savannah before arriving at Brown University.

Phillips currently serves on the Artists Council of New Music USA, a new organization created by the merger of the American Music Center (on whose Board of Directors he served in 2010-11) and Meet the Composer. He is also a member of the American Musicological Society, ASCAP (composer and publisher), College Music Society, Conductors Guild (Board member, 2006-08), and the League of American Orchestras, as well as the Anthony Burgess Center in Angers, France, and the International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester, England, which named him an Honorary Patron of the Foundation in June 2011.   1. I attended the Wexford concert tonight. A wonderful unforgettable night of superb music produced by 90+ young musicians. They were a delight and the programme was so exciting. We gave them three standing ovations and they gave us a wonderful show plus 2 encores. Thank you all for coming to wexford this evening.
